History of Chavakkad Block Panchayat

Chavakkad has held trade and cultural significance since ancient times. It developed into a major commercial center owing to its connection with water transport routes like Chettuva and the Canoly Canal.

The local self-government history of Chavakkad began in 1918 with the formation of the Chavakkad Union. At that time, it came under the Malabar District Board. The Panchayat Board system came into existence in 1927. In the early days, voting rights and candidacy were primarily restricted to tax-paying landowners. It was in 1953 that panchayat elections through secret ballot were introduced.

Following the formation of Kerala State, the boundaries of the Chavakkad Panchayat were altered during the panchayat reorganization in 1963. The Guruvayur region was separated, and areas like Palayoor, Punna, Thiroovathra, Blangad, and Manathala were included.

Later, the Chavakkad Block Panchayat was formed to coordinate rural development activities in the Chavakkad region. Today, it is one of the official block panchayats in the Thrissur district and is specifically documented in the records of the Kerala State Audit Department.
