Historical Summary
The origin of local self-governance in the region dates back to the 'Chavakkad Union' formed in 1918 under the Malabar District Board, which was part of the Madras Presidency. Chavakkad, which maintained foreign trade relations through waterways and the Canoly Canal, later transformed into a major development hub.
Historical Milestones & Factors
Ancient Trade Legacy
This coastal soil has witnessed foreign merchant ships arriving for trade since ancient times via the Kodungallur, Chettuva, and Enamakkal waterways, as well as the Canoly Canal. Formerly under the rule of the Punnathur Swaroopam, this region subsequently witnessed Dutch, Mysorean, and British administrative transitions.
Freedom Movement & Renaissance
Veliyankode Umar Khasi, who fought against British tax reforms, was imprisoned in Chavakkad. Local residents actively supported the historic Guruvayur Satyagraha and played a vital role in Kerala's socialist and renaissance movements.
Administrative Evolution
It evolved into a Union Board in 1918 and a Panchayath Board in 1927. Following the formation of Kerala State in 1956, the Chavakkad Block Panchayath came into existence to coordinate local development initiatives.
